Songs I like- by Artists I Don’t- “It’s My Life “- Bon Jovi. Bon Jovi over the past thirty years has been a very popular band. Their hit making days seem to be long over but back in the mid 80’s to around the turn of the century they had a string of hits- they have had 17 Top 40 hits and 4 #1’s- the #1’s being-“You Give Love A Bad Name”, “Livin’ On A Prayer”, Bad Medicine” and “I’ll Be There For You.” I have never cared at all for the Bon Jovi brand of rock music. I won’t say I am indifferent to them – I never liked them. One of their lesser hit songs though I love- “It’s My Life” went to only #33 in 2000 on the Hot 100. The song was written by Jon Bon Jovi, Richie Sambora and songwriter Max Martin. The song mentions another native of New Jersey- Frank SInatra ” “My heart is like an open highway / Like Frankie said / I did it ‘My Way‘. Bon Jovi said when he and Richie Sambora had a disagreement over the Sinatra line- “Sinatra made 16 movies and toured till he was 80. This is my role model.” He [Sambora] said, “You can’t write that damn lyric. Nobody cares about Frank Sinatra but you.” And I wrote it anyway. I have heard all of the Bon Jovi hits- and this one is the standout- it sounds different than the rest. I also will admit to liking another Bon Jovi song from that era 2002’s- “Bounce” which didn’t chart at all as a single. Even though It’s My Life wasn’t that big of a hit- it is the most viewed Bon Jovi video on youtube. Of course it’s not the best song with that title- that distinction goes to The Animals.
The first time I heard either of those songs- one summer on a camping trip the people near us- the guy had Bon Jovi playing loud into the evening. It was annoying- I had heard all that garbage over the years on the radio before- I didn’t need to hear it all again. Then after all the bad hits from the 80’s and 90’s- back to back was “It’s My Life” and “Bounce”- wow even Bon Jovi can come up with a couple gems.
