1969 Song of the Day is- “Sister Morphine” by Marianne Faithfull. Written by Mick Jagger, Keith Richards and Marianne Faithfull – the original was released as a b-side to Faithfull’s “Something Better” single in February 1969. The Stones would get around to doing a different version of “Sister Morphine” on their 1971 Sticky Fingers album. On Marianne Faithfull’s version she had Mick on acoustic guitar, Ry Cooder on slide guitar and bass , Jack Nitzsche on piano and organ and the always reliable Charlie Watts on drums. When The Stones released the song on Sticky Fingers they failed to give Marianne her songwriting credit- after a legal battle in the 90’s her co-authorship was acknowledged. Faithfull had written the lyrics- and at the time of the 1969 recording was still Mick’s girlfriend. Marianne Faithfull was not a heavy drug user in 1969 when this song was written but would become one in the early 70’s. This single wasn’t a hit but is probably the most famous song Faithfull is connected with and no doubt her songwriting credit has brought her financial rewards. Being the girl in the life of a Rolling Stone over the years took its toll on many a woman–which they just keep chugging along. Marianne Faithfull though was a survivor. Hard to believe all these years later Brian Jones is the only Stone who is still not around- while all four original members of The Ramones are gone.
