1969 Song of the Day is- Time Is Tight’ by Booker T. & The MG’s. Booker T. & The MG’s were pioneers- as one of the first integrated bands- during the early 1960s in Memphis. The band featured two black members-Booker T. Jones- organ and piano, Al Jackson on the drums and two white members- Lewie Steinberg on bass-replaced by Duck Dunn in 1965 and one of the greatest guitarists ever- Steve Cropper. They were elected into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1992. They were an instrumental band and also the house band at Stax Records- backing such artists as Otis Redding, Wilson Pickett, Sam & Dave, Albert King, etc. As an separate act they would have 7 Top 40 instrumental hits their biggest hit was Green Unions their first hit in 1962 #3. Time Is Tight was their second biggest hit- #6 in 1969. I was lucky enough to see Booker T. & The MG’s back up Neil Young a couple times when they toured in the 1990s.
