The Rolling Stones Song of the Day is As Tears Go By. As Tears Go By was written by Mick Jagger ,Keith Richards and The Rolling Stones manager Andrew Loog Oldham. It was the b-side to 19th Nervous Breakdown. As Tears Go By was released as an a-side in the United States and reached #6 on the Hot 100.  The only two members of The Rolling Stones who appear on the song and Mick singing and Keith on his acoustic guitar- the rest of the instruments played by an orchestra. The strings were arranged by Mike Leander who would later did the same for The Beatles “She’s Leaving Home.”

As Tears Go By was originally titled As Time Goes By but of course that was the title of a famous 1942 song from Casablanca so the song lyrics and title were changed from time to tears. It was one of the first songs that The Rolling Stones wrote- and was thought not to be a Rolling Stones type song so it was given to Marianne Faithfull who released it as a single and got to #9 in the UK. Faithfull would later admit she was never crazy about the song. In 1965 The Rolling Stones got around to recording their own version of their song.

  1. OK, today’s selection is a tipping point — count me a fan. So many good tunes. This one is exceptional. Yes, most people think of the RS as honky-tonkin rock n rollers, but it is some of their slower music that impacts more.

    • I have a few of her later day albums- she has lived a rough life- her voice now sounds pretty shot but her albums are interesting. For good or ill- her first husband John Dunbar co-founded the Indica Gallery where John met Yoko..
