It was fifty years ago today- October 17, 1968 in an announcement that shocked many the press secretary for President Kennedy’s widow Jackie Kennedy announced that the former First Lady had departed John F. Kennedy Airport from New York to get married later in the week to one of the worlds wealthiest men-the Greek shipping tycoon Aristotle Onassis. The wedding would be held on Onassis’s private island of Skorpios located in the Ionian Sea.
Mrs. Kennedy’s decision to marry Onassis was highly controversial at the time in the United States. But it is widely viewed now that she had her reasons- privacy and security for herself and her young children. Jackie O and Onassis remained married until his death at the age of 69 in 1975.
