• BUCK OWENS: TOGETHER AGAIN/ MY HEART SKIPS A BEAT: 1964: 4 STARS OUT OF 5 STARS: An outstanding Buck honky tonk album. The double sided single “Together Again” and “My Heart Skips A Beat” reached #1 on the country singles chart. Buck was riding high in the mid to late 60’s.
• BUCK OWENS AND HIS BUCKAROOS: I DON’T CARE: 1964: 2 1/2 STARS OUT OF 5 STARS: This is an odd album- a true team effort- Buck sings on some of the songs, his side kick the great Don Rich on a couple and Buckaroo Doyle Holey on a couple and there are instrumentals. Very uneven.
• BOB DYLAN: DOWN IN THE GROOVE: 1988: 1 1/2 STARS: The second Dylan bummer in a row. The only song on this that I really like is the song he wrote with Grateful Dead writer Robert Hunter- “Silvio” On a positive note- the concerts for this tour- started the “Never Ending Tour.”
• BOB MARLEY: GOLD: DISC 1: 2005: 5 STARS OUT OF 5 STARS: These two discs collect 34 of Marley’s best known songs. There are a few missteps like not having “Three Little Birds” on it. I can only think of two artists who a genre of music is so closely identified with one artist- you say reggae and everyone thinks Bob Marley -and bluegrass with Bill Monroe. Great collection here. Another star who has become bigger in death than he was in life.
• BOB MARLEY: GOLD: DISC 2: 2005: 5 STARS OUT OF 5 STARS:
• STEVE EARLE: LIVE IN NASHVILLE: 2014: 5 STARS OUT OF 5 STARS: Recorded in Nashville the year of Steve’s comeback from drugs and jail. Outstanding. A number of songs from his “Train A Coming” album. I saw him on this tour it was a very memorable one.
• THE HUMAN LEAGUE: DARE: 1981: 5 STARS OUT OF 5 STARS: A highly influential album in the early 80’s-synthpop. It sounded so different from everything else- when their “Don’t You Want Me” hit- going #1 in both the US and UK. I hadn’t listened to the album in a while and I am not a big synthpop fan but love this album. It would be the biggest success in The Human League’s career. This album and The Human League would influence the Pet Shop Boys, Moby among others.
• ROBYN: BODY TALK PART 1: 2010: 4 STARS OUT OF 5 STARS: These two albums came out in 2010. I heard of Robyn from listening to the rock critics on Sound Opinions- so I got the album- great electronic pop. If only Madonna made records this good in the past two decades. I thought while listening to these again- I haven’t heard her name since these albums–looked her up good reason- she hasn’t released anything since 2010. These albums received near universal acclaim. What gives?
