The 2013 year was supposed to end in a long playoff run, perhaps even a trip to the AFC title game, maybe even to the game with all the Roman numerals; it was not meant to be. The wheels came off on the season, after starting 2-0 Houston lost 14 straight games, and the Texans cleaned house. Gone is head coach Gary Kubiak, gone is DC Wade Phillips – personnel wise Matt Schaub is now in Oakland, reserve running back Ben Tate is in Cleveland of all places.
The Texans brought in Bill O’Brien as the new head man, with Romeo Crennel brought in to run the defense. Ryan Fitzpatrick was signed to replace Schaub, but he is not a long term answer. This team has needs all over the place, and they are definitely not one player away from making a playoff run. There is not an Andrew Luck type of quarterback in this draft. There are holes on offense and defense.
I really think that if they could find a suitor – the Texans would like to trade down and not have to take this pick. Its not often either, where no one knows what this team will do with this pick. There are some that are lobbying for Texas A&M quarterback Johnny Manziel; while I think that is in the consideration, that is not the player that I believe the Texans draft. Manziel was entertaining to watch, but I (like everyone else) wonder if that style would help him in the NFL.
So with the first pick of the 2014 NFL draft the Houston Texans select – Jadeveon Clowney – Defensive End, South Carolina. I think Clowney has some question marks, and is by no means the clear cut choice here, but pairing him with JJ Watt should create some havoc for opposing offenses. I think that the Texans will be able to get their QB at the top of round 2.
