On this day in 1907 a New Year’s Eve tradition began when the first New Year’s Eve celebration was held in Times Square in New York City. Times Square was known as Longacre Square in 1907. This is the first time they dropped the ball. That would be one of the last places I would want to be on New Year’s Eve. I was in that area last year a couple weeks before Christmas and it was crazy. I hate crowds like that. I will watch it again on television.
The only years when the ball didn’t drop on New Year’s Eve in Times Square since 1907 was during World War II in 1942 and 1943 when they didn’t in observance of wartime blackouts.
